Why Should Seniors Start Caring for Plants?

Seniors have a lot to gain from plant ownership. Several studies have demonstrated that spending time with plants improves physical and mental health, particularly as we age. Plant ownership has various benefits for seniors:

Spending time in the outdoors, especially caring for plants, has been found to boost memory and cognitive performance in seniors. The Journal of Environmental Psychology revealed that nature improves working memory and cognitive flexibility.

Plant care is also satisfying and pleasant on its own. A Journal of Health Psychology research indicated that gardening improves mood and reduces depressive symptoms. In addition, gardening may give elders purpose and boost self-esteem, according to a Journal of Applied Gerontology research.

Plant care may help elders remain active and healthy. According to a Journal of Aging and Health research, gardening may offer moderate-intensity physical exercise, improving health and well-being.

But how can you know which plants are right for you and how they can reduce your stress levels? Well, that’s exactly what I will explain in this guide, so let’s dive right into it!

Lavender

Lavender calms and relaxes. This aromatic shrub has nerve-calming essential oils. Lavender reduces stress and anxiety in healthy and chronically ill people.

The International Journal of Nursing Practice reported that breathing lavender essential oil substantially decreased stress and enhanced sleep quality in female college students. In another Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine research, lavender oil massage lowered anxiety in heart surgery patients.

You don’t need a spa or massage professional to enjoy lavender’s advantages as it may be used daily! You may diffuse lavender essential oil in your bedroom, add a few drops to your bathwater, or apply it on your temples and wrists.

  4. Hi, Folks. Just beware that some indoor plants can be toxic to pets, i.e. lilies. However, if they are out of reach or your pets ignore plants, enjoy. Grape Ivy and Pothos are also great indoor plants. Very easy to take care of. I’m eager to try some of those mentioned, especially Jasmine and Lavender. I have a wonderful large mound of Lavender (with my roses) in the front garden, which I love.
