7 Surprising Tricks That Instantly Boost Your Concentration

If you search for the word “concentration” in the dictionary, it’ll define it as “the ability to focus on a specific task or activity for an extended period of time”. This ability determines your productivity on a daily basis – but we all know it’s easier said than done, right?

Luckily, though, you can learn good concentration skills regardless of your age, occupation, or background. All it takes is motivation and finding the right ‘hacks’ that work for you. I can’t promise you it’ll be easy (it took me a few months just to discover what worked for me!), but I can promise you it’s 100% worth it.

Why does concentration matter?

Well, here are a few reasons why concentration is so important:

  • Improved productivity: When you are able to concentrate, you can work more efficiently and get more done in a shorter amount of time.
  • Enhanced learning and memory: Concentration can help you better absorb and retain information, which can be especially helpful when learning new things or studying.
  • Greater creativity: Focusing your attention on a specific task or problem can help stimulate creativity and problem-solving skills.
  • Better decision-making: Being able to concentrate can help you weigh the pros and cons of different options and make more informed decisions.
  • Increased well-being: Concentration can help you reduce stress and improve your overall well-being by allowing you to be more present and better manage your emotions.

In other words, you can improve your productivity, learning, and overall well-being by cultivating your ability to concentrate.

Identify your distractions

Take a moment to identify what distracts you and try to minimize or eliminate those distractions as much as possible. Here are a few things that helped me out in 2022:

  • Pay attention to what disrupts your focus: notice what disrupts your focus when you are working or trying to concentrate.
  • Keep a log: write down your distractions whenever they happen to help you identify patterns and common triggers. Journaling can also be therapeutic for anybody if you’re ready to put down your thoughts and feelings on paper.

Not sure why you can’t focus? You can always ask a friend or colleague for their perspective on what may be distracting you.

Create a dedicated workspace

Trust me, no matter how determined you are to succeed, working from your couch in front of the TV just won’t work! Here are a few tips to create the perfect space for you:

  • Keep your workspace clean and organized.
  • Consider adding plants, artwork, or other decorations that help create a positive and inspiring environment. Personally, I’ve found that plants keep me inspired and hopeful!
  • Invest in a comfortable desk (who can focus when their back hurts?!);
  • Use apps or tools that can help block out distractions or limit your access to certain websites or apps.

Break tasks into smaller chunks

Rather than trying to tackle a huge task all at once, break it down into smaller, more manageable chunks. This can make it easier to focus and stay motivated – and it’s been a HUGE game-changer for my workflow!

Not sure where to start? Here are a few tips I’ve tried:

  • Identify the main goals of the task;
  • Break the task into smaller steps so that it feel more manageable;
  • Prioritize the steps: Identify which steps are most important or time-sensitive, and tackle those first to save energy;
  • Set deadlines: You can use a calendar or task management tool to help track your progress and stay on schedule.

Use the Pomodoro Technique

The Pomodoro Technique is a popular method that involves working for a set period of time, followed by a short break. Basically, if you take regular breaks, you can improve your concentration and productivity.

Here is how the Pomodoro Technique typically works:

  • Choose a task you want to work on;
  • Set a timer for 25 minutes, which is known as a “Pomodoro.”
  • Work on the task: Focus on the task for the full 25 minutes without any distractions.
  • Take a break: Once the timer goes off, take a short break, usually 5-10 minutes.
  • Repeat: Repeat the process, taking a longer break (15-30 minutes) after every four Pomodoros.

Take breaks

While it’s important to focus on tasks, it’s also important to take breaks to rest and recharge. Scheduling regular breaks can help boost your concentration and productivity. Note that this is different from the Pomodoro method I mentioned above because that has a specific time set!

Here are a few reasons why taking breaks can be beneficial:

  • Reducing fatigue and burnout: taking regular breaks to recharge and feel more energized and focused.
  • Improving your creativity and problem-solving skills;
  • Helping you stay motivated: Working on a task for too long can lead to boredom and demotivation. Taking breaks can help you stay motivated and engaged.
  • Improving your focus: Taking breaks can help you come back to your work with a brand new perspective and improved focus.

Practice mindfulness

Practicing mindfulness can be a helpful way to improve your concentration and focus. Mindfulness basically means paying attention to the present moment with an open and non-judgmental attitude. It can help calm the mind and reduce distractions, which can improve concentration and focus. After all, I dedicated an entire category to this practice for good reason!

Here are a few tips for practicing mindfulness to improve concentration:

  • Set aside dedicated time: Set aside dedicated time to practice mindfulness, such as a few minutes before or after work or during a break.
  • Find a comfortable and quiet location: Choose a comfortable and quiet location to practice mindfulness, such as a park or your home.
  • Focus on your breath: One common mindfulness practice is to focus on your breath. Sit comfortably and bring your attention to the sensation of your breathing as it moves in and out of your body.
  • Notice and acknowledge distractions: When distractions arise, acknowledge them and then bring your attention back to your breath.
  • Practice regularly: The more you practice mindfulness, the more you can improve your concentration and focus. Even five minutes a day can make a huge difference in the long run, honestly!

Exercise regularly

Research has shown that regular exercise can bring many cognitive benefits, including improved concentration and focus. Basically, exercise can stimulate the production of chemicals in the brain that support the growth of neurons, which can improve cognitive function. Whether it’s walking, jogging, or even a pilates class, any kind of physical activity will do the trick!

Here are a few tips to integrate into your routine for concentration:

  • Choose activities that you enjoy: Choose activities that you enjoy, as this can make it easier to stick to a regular exercise routine.
  • Set achievable goals: Set achievable goals, such as exercising a certain number of days per week or increasing the duration or intensity of your workouts gradually over time.
  • Find an accountability partner: Consider finding an accountability partner, such as a friend or workout buddy, to help you stay motivated and on the right track.
  • Make it a habit: Try to make exercise a regular part of your routine by setting aside dedicated time for it each day or week.
  • Mix it up: Vary your workouts to keep things interesting and avoid boredom.
